Why we publish before we feel ready

Research culture pushes work toward polish. The incentive gradient runs from working note to internal report to preprint to press release, and each step adds months. By the time findings are dressed for publication, they answer questions people stopped asking.

We would rather publish at the note stage. A short document that says what we tried, what happened, and what we now believe is useful long before it is complete, precisely because it is incomplete. Mistakes surface earlier when claims are small enough to check.

The rules we hold ourselves to

  • State the claim in one sentence before writing the rest.
  • Show the setup, including the parts that embarrass it.
  • Publish null results under the same heading as positive ones.
  • Version everything; corrections are edits, not scandals.

There is a cost. Notes age badly and invite criticism of drafts. We accept both. A public trail of corrected small claims seems more honest, and more useful to strangers, than a private road to a flawless paper that may never ship.
